Burnout among health workers is a significant public health issue. The overall well-being of health workers is impacted, and patient care is negatively affected.
“Health system leaders must make worker well-being a measurable priority, with accountability at the highest level of the organization, and include health workers in designing and implementing a comprehensive well-being strategy” (US Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy).
There are many ways we can help ourselves, support each other and positively influence healthcare environments.
Consider the following:
- Prioritize and advocate for your personal well-being. Take the vacation time. Turn off the phone. Get outside.
- Watch for signs of distress and burnout in yourself and others. Stay connected. Ask for help.
- Foster a work culture that values well-being. Model it for your colleagues, direct reports, and mentees.
- Advocate for change in your community, school, place of work, and home.
