Session 2 of 6 – Accessibility & Communication: Getting to Know Direct Access – Touch

This is an Intermediate Level course. We highly recommend you have knowledge of and/or experience with the following in order to best benefit from this learning opportunity:

• Solid foundation in Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)
• Knowledge of AAC direct and indirect access methods (touch, eye gaze, switch scanning)
• Proficiency with assessment for AAC access methods for direct and indirect access

Individuals who utilize augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems may access these systems through a variety of access methods. The most common access method is a form of direct access, touch. Most of us utilize touch access daily with our personal phones and tablets, but we may not be familiar with options available to support those with motor, vision, and sensory differences. This session will provide an in-depth look at touch access and the various settings and supports we can implement to increase accessibility and independence with communication systems.

Following this training, participants will be able to:

1. Identify 3 touch access options
2. Describe touch access supports to meet needs of patients with motor and sensory differences
3. Describe assessment process to determine if touch access is appropriate

This course meets the requirement for Professional Development hours towards your ASHA renewal since it is approved by TSHA! You can count these hours towards ASHA renewal when you submit your Compliance Form.
