Modified Barium Swallow Studies are the only instrumental assessment that can view all 3 phases of the swallow in its entirety. If a patient is penetrating or aspirating during the MBSS, there are a variety of strategies to trial that have the potential to eliminate those penetrations and/or aspirations. During this pediatric focused course, pictures and videos will be utilized to educate participants on all phases of the swallow, as well as identify anatomical structures and causes of dysphagia. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and engage in activities throughout the presentation. The goal of this course is to provide a base of knowledge for therapists regarding the need for Modified Barium Swallow Studies to improve their ability to advocate for their patients.

Following this Course, participants will be able to:

Identify and label anatomical structures in the lateral and anterior-posterior view during a Modified Barium Swallow Study.
Describe each of the three phases of the swallow function.
List 3 different strategies or ways of altering a patient’s bolus presentation in attempt to eliminate penetration and/or aspiration.
List at least 5 deficits that can be viewed during a Modified Barium Swallow Study that may lead to dysphagia.

Instructor

Ashley Stone

Ashley Stone, M.S. CCC-SLP is a Speech-Language Pathologist and the Pediatric Program Manager at DiagnosTEX in North Richland Hills. She graduated with her Bachelors of Science from Baylor University and her Masters of Science in Communication Disorders from the University of Texas at Dallas. She gained majority of her pediatric experience from working in pediatric hospitals in the NICU, acute care & in-patient rehab units, while also serving children in the home health setting. She left the hospital setting to develop the Pediatric MBSS program at DiagnosTEX and began serving patients in their outpatient clinic in March of 2023, while most recently expanding services to utilize the mobile clinic.
