THIS COURSE HAS ENDED – Understanding the Need and Advocating for Pediatric Modified Barium Swallow Studies

Modified Barium Swallow Studies are the only instrumental assessment that can view all 3 phases of the swallow in its entirety. If a patient is penetrating or aspirating during the MBSS, there are a variety of strategies to trial that have the potential to eliminate those penetrations and/or aspirations. During this pediatric focused course, pictures and videos will be utilized to educate participants on all phases of the swallow, as well as identify anatomical structures and causes of dysphagia. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and engage in activities throughout the presentation. The goal of this course is to provide a base of knowledge for therapists regarding the need for Modified Barium Swallow Studies to improve their ability to advocate for their patients.

Following this Course, participants will be able to:

1. Identify and label anatomical structures in the lateral and anterior-posterior view during a Modified Barium Swallow Study.
2. Describe each of the three phases of the swallow function.
3. List 3 different strategies or ways of altering a patient’s bolus presentation in attempt to eliminate penetration and/or aspiration.
4. List at least 5 deficits that can be viewed during a Modified Barium Swallow Study that may lead to dysphagia.
