What do you do when a child with a diagnosis of childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is placed on your caseload and you need to start treating the child immediately? Many clinicians experience high work-loads and do not always have time available when needed to take a deep-dive into a topic. In this short, clinically-focused course, a brief overview of CAS will be provided and then the majority of the time will be spent discussing the top “do’s and don’ts” of evidence-based therapy for CAS, with discussion of how to structure a therapy session. The goal of this course is to give a clinician immediately actionable items to implement in therapy. As the clinician gets to know the child, more refined treatment may be recommended. References and resources will be provided to guide clinicians towards learning about more specific methodologies.

Following this course, participants will be able to:

  1. List two “do’s” of apraxia therapy.
  2. List two “don’ts” of apraxia therapy
  3. Describe a possible structure for a motor speech focused session.

This course meets the requirement for Professional Development hours towards your ASHA renewal since it is approved by TSHA! You can count these hours towards ASHA renewal when you submit your Compliance Form.
