Advanced Clinical Thinking Using Principles of Motor Learning

This is an Advanced Level course. We highly recommend you have knowledge of and/or experience with the following in order to best benefit from this learning opportunity:

• Characteristics of CAS according to Mayo 10+1, and how those features may change over time
• Principles of motor learning and how they are used in treatment of CAS
• Dynamic Temporal Tactile Cueing (DTTC), ReST, Nuffield Dyspraxia Programme (NDP3) and/or Speech Motor Chaining
• multisensory cueing

Utilizing motor speech methodologies based on the principles of motor learning, such as Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC) and Rapid Syllable Transition Treatment (ReST) is effective for many children with motor speech disorders. However, despite the use of these treatment methods, some children do not generalize their speech targets. In this interactive advanced course, participants will be guided through clinical thinking utilizing the principles of motor learning to problem-solve cases and situations in which a child is making limited progress in motor speech therapy. The goal will be to help participants understand the principles behind research-based approaches so they can modify them to meet the needs of the child and provide true evidence-based practice.

Following this training, participants will be able to:

1.  Discuss how knowledge of performance is used differently in DTTC than ReST.
2.  Discuss how multisensory cueing is used differently in DTTC than ReST.
3.  Name three principles of motor learning that are important for generalization.
