Power mobility offers children who are unable to functionally ambulate opportunities for increased exploration, participation, independence, and engagement in everyday activities. However, many school-aged children have limited opportunities to learn and practice power mobility skills. This session presents an activity-based approach to power mobility interventions that integrates learning to use a power mobility device within meaningful real-world activities that reflect their interests, daily routines, and participation preferences. Providing these opportunities in real-life contexts may increase children’s awareness of the benefits, possibilities, and autonomy afforded by self-initiated mobility in a power mobility device. This session will introduce use of the process-based Assessment of Learning Powered mobility use (ALP) Facilitating Strategies for power mobility intervention in combination with the ALP Assessment to optimally support children’s learning. Participants will gain an overview of the ALP Approach, its components, and implementation during power mobility intervention sessions through use of dialogue and other techniques to support a child in learning to use a power mobility device. Examples from clinical practice will illustrate and highlight strategies for embedding mobility learning within everyday contexts that are relevant and motivating for the individual child.

Following this course, participants will be able to:

1. Differentiate between task-based and process-based power mobility interventions
2. Discuss use of the Assessment of Learning Powered mobility use (ALP) Facilitating Strategies to optimally support a child’s in learning to use a power mobility device.
3. List 3 examples of how dialogue is used in the ALP Approach to support a child in learning to use a power mobility device.
4. Discuss application of the ALP Facilitating Strategies in a sample case
