Power wheelchairs (PWCs) provide significant benefits across all domains of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). Despite these benefits, many school-aged children who are unable to functionally ambulate may never have the opportunity to learn to use a PWC. This course will examine the current evidence supporting PWC use among school-aged children, including its impact on participation, independence, and quality of life. The course will explore parental perspectives regarding their children’s PWC use, as well as common barriers to pediatric power mobility access and implementation. The course will also discuss the process-based approaches to PWC assessment, the advantages of using these approaches with school-aged children who are learning to use a PWC, and use of the Assessment of Learning Powered Mobility (ALP) with children across the continuum of pediatric power mobility learner groups. Finally, the course will address special considerations related to PWC use in school and community environments.
Following this course, participants will be able to:
- Discuss 3 key research findings to support the evidence-based use of power wheelchairs in school-aged children.
- Contrast the characteristics of children in the 3 power mobility learner groups.
- Differentiate between task-based and process-based power wheelchair assessment
- Discuss use of the Assessment of Learning powered mobility use to identify where a child is in the process of learning to use a power wheelchair.
Purchasing this course gives you access to the LIVE Webinar, as well as the RECORDED WEBINAR (for as long as it is active on the Knowledge Is Now Platform). This event will be recorded and available on demand within 10 days of the live event. Watch the recorded version at your own pace!
