Therapists manage a variety of different relationships on a day to day basis. For example, there are relationships with patients and their caregivers and families, as well as relationships with students or mentees. At times, therapists may struggle to establish clear boundaries at the start of a relationship, and as a result, ethical questions may arise. In these cases, it is vital that therapists reset appropriate boundaries in order to maintain professional, ethical and effective relationships. This training will focus on the importance of boundaries in professional relationships and the implications of unclear boundaries. In addition, the training will provide therapists with skills for identification of poor boundaries, as well as problem solving tools for determination of effective solutions.
Following this course, participants will be able to:
- Describe at least 3 ways to set boundaries with caregivers, patients, and/or students at the beginning of the working relationship.
- Identify when boundaries have been crossed in at least 3 different scenarios.
- Describe at least 2 different ways to reset and maintain boundaries with caregivers, patients, and students.
- List at least 5 principles from the ASHA Code of Ethics as they apply to setting and maintaining appropriate relationships with clients, families, and colleagues.
- Describe at least 2 ways that limited boundaries impact the discharge process with clients and families.
This course meets the requirement for Professional Development hours towards your ASHA renewal since it is approved by TSHA! You can count these hours towards ASHA renewal when you submit your Compliance Form. This course also meets the Ethics course requirement.
