Pause for a moment to consider your professional career. Did you have a relationship with a mentor early on, someone who supported your learning and development? Did you complete fieldwork as a student with a supervisor as your guide? Maybe you have a mentor now? Are you currently providing mentorship or supervision, or interested in serving in that role in the future? The mentor-mentee / supervisor-student/direct report relationship is a partnership, one that requires cooperation, mutual respect, and trust. Mentors and supervisors must have content expertise and solid ethics, as well as strong communication and interpersonal skills. To serve in these roles, one must demonstrate patience, show willingness to take risks, and be able to provide objective feedback to motivate and enhance mentee performance. Most importantly, a strong mentor, supervisor, or leader must have self-awareness. Our ability to understand ourselves greatly impacts our success as a mentor or leader. Following this course, participants will be able to:
- Describe 3 ways that adult learning principles impact mentoring and supervision.
- Discuss 3 strategies for creating and maintaining a sense of trust and mutual respect in the mentor-mentee / supervisor-student/direct report relationship.
- Describe the collaborative goal setting process and how to provide feedback when goals are not being met.
- Define reflective practice and provide an example of the process during mentoring.
- Identify 2 potential ethical challenges related to mentoring/supervision, with proposed prevention strategies or solutions.
This course meets the requirement for Professional Development hours towards your ASHA renewal since it is approved by TSHA! You can count these hours towards ASHA renewal when you submit your Compliance Form. This course also meets the ASHA Supervision course requirement.
