Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI) - Brain Based Strategies

Overview

This course will address populations most at risk for developing a cortical visual impairment and will guide therapists in recognizing signs and symptoms. Therapists will also learn a variety of evidence-based strategies and how to incorporate these strategies into therapeutic intervention.

Following this course, participants will be able to:

Describe the visual cortex/pathway
Identify the characteristics of a cortical visual impairment
List the levels of a CVI and describe the characteristics of each level
Describe intervention strategies for gaining visual attention and improving performance

Rhiannon Thomas graduated from Texas Tech University in 2007 with a Master’s degree in occupational therapy. She has worked in pediatrics since 2008 and specializes in treating children with low vision and especially CVI.
