For way too long, behavioral regulation needs have only been viewed at the surface level resulting in many children and adults being misunderstood and many underlying needs overlooked. As an autistic self-advocate and someone that has been subject to surface behavioral approaches, Chloe will share first-hand accounts about the long-term detrimental impact that these approaches have had on her life. The emerging research that echoes Chloe’s experiences will be shared and will provide further justification for why we need to see past observable behaviors and get better at supporting the underlying causes that often contribute to what it is we see on the outside. The 5 Keys to Behavioral Regulation provides a practical, evidence-based framework for offering strategies that respect and support the underlying regulation needs in children and adults with a variety of learning needs.
Following this course, participants will be able to:
- Describe 2 issues with current trends in behavior assessment and supports
- State at least 1 term/phrase to replace the term/phrase “challenging behavior”
- Identify 2 potential observable “challenging behaviors”, and discuss at least 2 potential underlying causes
- List the 5 Keys to Behavior Regulation discussed in this course
- Describe how to implement at least 5 practical strategies associated with the 5 Keys
Note: This course meets the requirement for Professional Development hours towards your ASHA renewal since it is approved by TSHA! You can count these hours towards ASHA renewal when you submit your Compliance Form.
