Part 1: October 23, 2026 | 11:30 AM-1:00 PM CST (1.5 hours)

Effective leadership begins with leading yourself. This interactive course explores the foundational concepts and practices of self-leadership, equipping participants with the knowledge and skills to intentionally manage their thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and relationships in ways that enhance both personal well-being and leadership effectiveness. Participants will examine the role of self-awareness, emotional intelligence, strengths, values, gratitude, self-compassion, and ego management in developing authentic, resilient, and effective leaders.

Through evidence-based content, self-assessments, and guided reflection activities, participants will gain deeper insight into their leadership style, identify opportunities for growth, and develop practical strategies for applying self-leadership in their daily work and personal lives. By strengthening these foundational capabilities, participants will be better prepared to build meaningful relationships, navigate change, make values-based decisions, and positively influence others.

For occupational therapy clinicians, self-leadership is especially relevant to navigating complex clinical decisions, developing therapeutic relationships, collaborating effectively with interprofessional teams, responding constructively to feedback and change, and sustaining effectiveness in demanding practice environments. Participants will leave with practical strategies for leading themselves with greater clarity, emotional intelligence, self-compassion, and purpose.

Following this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the concept of self-leadership and explain its relationship to leadership effectiveness, well-being, and organizational success.
  2. Assess their current level of self-awareness and identify personal strengths, blind spots, emotional triggers, and opportunities for continued growth.
  3. Explain the four skills of emotional intelligence – self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management – and identify strategies for developing each skill.
  4. Interpret the results of a strengths assessment and develop strategies to intentionally leverage personal strengths while managing potential strengths overuse and partnering with others to complement limitations.
  5. Clarify personal and professional values and apply those values to guide decision-making, priorities, and authentic leadership behaviors.
  6. Apply practices that enhance resilience and well-being, including gratitude, self-compassion, and constructive self-talk, to improve emotional regulation and adaptability.
  7. Recognize the influence of ego on leadership effectiveness and develop strategies to increase humility, openness to feedback, and continuous learning.
  8. Develop an individualized self-leadership action plan that identifies specific behavioral commitments and practices to support ongoing leadership growth and effectiveness.
