Unlocking Communication: AAC Essentials for Parents, Caregivers and Therapists New to Supporting Communication

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) can open doors for communication for individuals with limited or no verbal speech. The parents, caregivers and others working to support the use of AAC may feel overwhelmed when selecting and implementing AAC. This course is designed to introduce parents, caregivers and new practitioners to the world of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and provide them with practical tools and strategies to support their child’s communication development. Whether your child has limited verbal speech or non-verbal communication needs, this course will empower you with the knowledge to explore and implement AAC methods effectively.

The course begins by defining AAC and its importance for children with communication challenges. Participants will learn about different types of AAC systems, and how to choose the right system for your child, considering their individual needs, preferences, and developmental stage. The process for getting a funded device will be reviewed. Additionally, participants will gain an understanding of the role of AAC in enhancing both expressive and receptive communication skills. This session will also provide practical tips for integrating AAC into daily life. By the end of the course, parents will feel more confident and equipped to support their child’s communication journey using AAC, fostering greater independence, connection, and understanding.

2. list steps needed to get an AAC system through a funding source
3. identify 3 strategies to teach communication skills with an AAC system
