Target Selection for Children with CAS: From Emerging to Conversational Speakers

This is an Advanced Level course. We highly recommend you have knowledge of and/or experience with the following in order to best benefit from this learning opportunity:

• characteristics of CAS according to Mayo 10+1, and how those features may change over time
• principles of motor learning and how they are used in treatment of CAS
• Dynamic Temporal Tactile Cueing (DTTC), ReST, Nuffield Dyspraxia Programme (NDP3) and/or Speech Motor Chaining
• multisensory cueing

If you do not already have the above knowledge/experience, we recommend the following 2 courses:

  • Evidence Based Treatment Methodologies for Childhood Apraxia of Speech

Selecting appropriate speech targets, including words and phrases, for children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) can be challenging, even for experienced clinicians. Factors to consider, such as treatment approach, phonemic repertoires, coarticulation, phonotactic shape, number of syllables, movement patterns, stress patterns, pragmatics and client motivation, will be discussed. Clinical reasoning to guide target selection will be discussed.

Following this course, participants will be able to:

1. List 3-5 factors to consider when selecting speech targets for children with childhood apraxia of speech.
2. List 2 areas of likely focus for goals for emerging speakers.
3. Provide an example of a goal for a total communicator.
4. List 2 likely areas of focus for goals for conversational speakers.
