Torticollis, More Than Just a Tilt

Congenital muscular torticollis is one of the most common congenital anomalies in infants. With skilled early intervention, outcomes for these infants can be greatly improved. This course will focus on the who, what, how, and when to treat infants with torticollis. Therapists will be able to perform thorough evaluations of infants with asymmetries and appropriately classify the level of severity. First-choice interventions, as outlined by the American Physical Therapy Association Clinical Practice Guidelines, will be reviewed as well as appropriate parent education and recommendations for treatment frequency. Therapists will be comfortable and confident to provide excellent care to infants with torticollis and implement safe practices to carry over intervention techniques to reduce risks associated with torticollis.

Following this course, participants will be able to:

1. List the necessary components of a thorough screening for non-muscular causes of asymmetry and conditions associated with CMT that warrant referral for additional testing
2. Describe the five components of first-choice interventions
3. Identify the five criteria for discontinuation from direct therapy intervention
4. Identify signs or symptoms of torticollis and make appropriate referrals to other disciplines for treatment.
5. Implement strategies into treatment sessions to promote generalized safe feeding practices within the home.
6. Identify and carry over intervention techniques to reduce the impact of torticollis on infant feeding.
