Professionals provide health information via handouts, videos, and social media posts consistently to families. When providing information to families, it is important to consider the readability, accuracy, and effectiveness of the message. There are cultural humility factors that should be concerned when providing health information. In this session, we will evaluate health information, discuss the factors to consider regarding dissemination of health information, and review case studies.

Following this course, participants will be able to:

1. Define health literacy and the aspects that impact care for clients that we work with.
2. Identify aspects that assist with the readability of health information.
3. Examine case studies based on the Three A’s for health literacy information.

This course meets the 2 PDH requirement previously referred to as DEI, as well as the Professional Development hours requirement! You can submit to ASHA through the ASHA Compliance Form.

 

Instructor

Sydney Bassard, MSP, CCC-SLP specializes in working with Deaf and hard of hearing individuals and those with dyslexia. She earned her B.S. in Public Health and Master of Speech Pathology from the University of South Carolina. Sydney has remained actively involved with research initiatives throughout her career by assisting with data collection and collaborative efforts with researchers. She owns The Listening SLP, PLLC, which serves individuals in Charlotte and the surrounding areas of NC as well as Virginia and South Carolina virtually.
