Tube Weaning in the Pediatric Population

Tube feeding is essential for many infants and children but weaning off tube feeds and transitioning to oral feeds can be challenging. This presentation will discuss the approach to tube weaning from an interprofessional perspective. Specific topics will include the value of each interprofessional team member, addressing barriers and challenges during the tube weaning process, options for tracking outcomes, and the importance of supporting the child and family. Case studies and pertinent research will be discussed in addition to considerations for multi-cultural mealtime practices and the impact of social determinants of health on tube weaning.

Following this course, participants will be able to: 

1. Explain the value in an interprofessional tube weaning approach
2. Describe the role of each provider, including the family and patient, within the interprofessional team
3. Identify the challenges and successes that can occur during the tube weaning process
