Tube feeding is essential for many infants and children but weaning off tube feeds and transitioning to oral feeds can be challenging. This presentation will discuss the approach to tube weaning from an interprofessional perspective. Specific topics will include the value of each interprofessional team member, addressing barriers and challenges during the tube weaning process, options for tracking outcomes, and the importance of supporting the child and family. Case studies and pertinent research will be discussed in addition to considerations for multi-cultural mealtime practices and the impact of social determinants of health on tube weaning.

1. Explain the value in an interprofessional tube weaning approach
2. Describe the role of each provider, including the family and patient, within the interprofessional team
3. Identify the challenges and successes that can occur during the tube weaning process

Instructor

Allison Brown & Dr. Derek Ngai

Dr. Derek Ngai

Dr. Derek Ngai is a board-certified pediatric gastroenterologist with an interest in feeding disorders. He works with a multidisciplinary team (which includes a feeding therapist and a dietitian) at Children’s Health to wean enteral nutrition dependent patients safely and effectively off their feeding tubes. Outside of GI, Dr. Ngai is currently pursuing addition training in clinical informatics. He wishes to apply his informatics skills to improve patient care, safety, and satisfaction not only in GI but throughout the entire field of medicine.

Allison Brown

Allison Tidwell Brown, MS, CCC-SLP, BCS-S received her master’s degree from the University of Texas at Dallas in 2008. She is a pediatric Speech Language Pathologist and Board-Certified Specialist in Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders at Children's Health in Dallas, TX. Allison is a lead outpatient feeding therapist at Children’s Health and is a member of the multidisciplinary saliva management team and GI tube weaning team. Her clinical focus is with infant feeding, GI, saliva management, and instrumental assessment of the swallow including VFSS and FEES. Allison has spoken at regional and national conferences and teaches a graduate course in Pediatric Dysphagia at the University of Texas at Dallas.
