Every Voice Counts: Literacy At The Intersection Of Language And Disability

Overview

This one-hour training explores the complex relationship between literacy, language development, and disability. Participants will examine how language-based disabilities (such as dyslexia, developmental language disorder, and speech-language impairments) impact literacy acquisition, and how educators can recognize and support diverse learners through inclusive, evidence-based practices. The session emphasizes the importance of equity, early identification, and individualized instruction in fostering literacy growth for all students—regardless of language ability or disability status

Following this training, participants will be able to:

List at least three language-based disabilities that can impact literacy development.
Describe how language abilities and disabilities influence reading and writing outcomes.
Identify at least two instructional strategies that support literacy development for students with language-based disabilities.

Alexis Lawton

Alexis Lawton, MS+30, CCC-SLP is a speech-language pathologist in Walterboro, South Carolina. She is an adjunct professor in the speech-language pathology program at West Coast University. She is the assistant director of programming of the South Carolina Multilingual Learner Network. She's also working on her PhD in literacy, language, and culture at Clemson University. Alexis' current research interests are bi/multilingualism, literacy, language, language difference vs disorder, culturally sustaining literacy pedagogies, and preparing SLP students to work with individuals with diverse communication and learning needs.
