As SLPs, the assessment process can be lengthy and time consuming. In most settings, we are given a short amount of time to complete an assessment and document it in a way that justifies the services we are recommending and meets the needs and expectations of the health plan. We often struggle with identifying meaningful goals based on the standardized testing we are required to complete.

This course will focus on how to utilize caregivers to determine functional impairments a child experiences daily and what routines those impact. We will discuss choosing the right assessment tool and how to compliment it with informal assessment data to support recommendations while also building an efficient yet comprehensive assessment report. Strategies on how to then develop meaningful and functional goals efficiently will be reviewed and practiced.

This course includes:
  • Activity guide
  • SLP Comprehensive Assessment List
Following this training, participants will be able to:
  1. Describe at least 3 ways to gather more information from caregivers during the assessment process to develop child and family centered goals that are meaningful and integrate into the family routine.
  2. Describe at least 3 areas of development to assess and document in an evaluation outside of standardized testing.
  3. Write at least 2 SMART goals through case study examples and implementation of reviewed strategies.

Note: This course meets the requirement for Professional Development hours towards your ASHA renewal since it is approved by TSHA! You can count these hours towards ASHA renewal when you submit your Compliance Form.
