Rapid Syllable Transition Treatment, or ReST, is a treatment methodology based in the principles of motor learning that is designed to improve motor planning and programming in children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech. While many SLPs treating children with CAS utilize DTTC, ReST is a different evidence-based tool intended to meet the needs of children with less severe forms of CAS. It utilizes nonwords to address the improvement of speech production across three components: sounds, beats, and smoothness. These three components are taught to the child and then used as a scoring rubric during practice trials. The ReST treatment method has some of the strongest evidence to back it and clinicians find it easy to set up and implement.
Following this training, participants will be able to:
- Describe the teaching and practice phases of ReST with regard to their purpose and instructions.
- Define 3 principles of motor learning and how ReST uses them to facilitate motor learning and retention.
- List characteristics that would make a child a good candidate for ReST.
