Cultivating Confidence in AAC Evaluations, Trials and Goal Writing

AAC evaluations and feature matching can feel overwhelming and daunting. How can I know that I am setting up a student/patient for success when it comes to AAC? Throughout this session, the SLP will learn how to conduct informative language and assistive technology evaluations that assess prelinguistic skills, symbolic language, and functions of communication to create a holistic picture of the client’s receptive and expressive language skills. The attendee will also learn how to use the information gathered in this assessment to create a device feature match, which describes the different necessary components that an individual’s device needs to contain. SLPs will also learn how to conduct ethical device trials and how to structure goals for AAC users at a variety of linguistic stages.

Following this course, participants will be able to:

1. Determine three different reasons that an individual needs AAC.
2. Determine three different potential assessment tools to use in an AAC evaluation.
3. Write goals for AAC users about device exploration, word learning, and communication repair.
