The presence of disfluencies in a child’s speech may be indicative of difficulties motor planning/programming. In some cases, it may be difficult to decipher whether these disfluencies are characteristic of apraxia or stuttering. In this case study, presenters will discuss the differential diagnosis of these two disorders.

Following this course, participants will be able to:

List two types of disfluencies that are indicative of stuttering.
List two types of disfluencies that are not indicative of stuttering.
List two differentiating factors between apraxia and stuttering.

Breanna Waldrup

Breanna Waldrup, MS, CCC-SLP is a speech-language pathologist. She is recognized for Advanced Training and Expertise in Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) by Apraxia Kids. Breanna has specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of motor speech disorders, particularly CAS, for 12+ years and has presented at conferences and provided trainings on the diagnosis and treatment of CAS and literacy throughout the country.

Jaime Michise

Jaime Michise, MS, CCC-SLP, BCS-SCF, is a board-certified specialist in stuttering, cluttering, and other fluency disorders. She has a private practice in Frisco, Texas, working with individuals of all ages with fluency differences. She teaches graduate stuttering at Stephen F. Austin State University, is a faculty member at Camp Shout Out for Youth Who Stutter, and co-leads the Dallas TWST Chapter of the National Stuttering Association. Jaime has also presented at the state, national, and international level on the topics of stuttering, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and mindfulness.
