Bridging the Gap: How Knowledge Translation Enhances Evidence-Based Practice in Pediatric Rehabilitation

The Challenge: Despite advances in pediatric rehabilitation research, many clinicians struggle to implement evidence-based practice (EBP) due to time constraints, limited access to research, and institutional barriers—ultimately impacting patient outcomes.

A recent systematic review highlights how knowledge translation (KT) interventions help professionals like occupational therapists, physical therapists, and speech-language pathologists integrate research into practice.
Effective KT Strategies:
✅ Workshops & Training – Structured learning to update skills
✅ Mentorship & Knowledge Brokers – Expert guidance on best practices
✅ Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) – Ongoing assessment and feedback
✅ Communities of Practice (CoP) – Peer learning and collaboration
✅ Audit & Feedback Systems – Reviewing clinician performance with insights
✅ Reminders & Monitoring – Digital tools to reinforce EBP adherence
Why It Matters:
These strategies significantly improve:
✔ Clinical knowledge and skills
✔ Confidence and adherence to best practices
✔ Attitudes toward evidence-based care
✔ Long-term professional behavior change
However, challenges remain, including institutional resistance and time constraints. More rigorous studies, such as randomized controlled trials (RCTs), are needed to validate long-term impact.
